It was December, 2004 when the Pakistan Cochlear implant programme was innitiated in Karachi. Congenitally hearing impaired, or hearing loss patients can find a simple solution to hearing and speech. For these hearing impaired patients problems, Dr.Najam Hearing clinic in Karachi offers Cochlear implants and hearing aid all over Pakistan.
Cochlear Implants convert speech and other sounds into electrical energy by stimulating the inner ear hearing nerves. The implant includes both internal and external components. These include an external speech processor, a headset worn behind the ear, and an implanted receiver/stimulator with an electrode array. An electronic device is placed in the ear through surgery. It performs the function of the damaged inner ear parts and sends signals back to the brain.
The external sound processor records, filters, and processes sound. The sound processor converts the filtered sounds into digital information that is transmitted to the internal implant part. The internal implant converts digital information into electrical signals, then sent to the tiny curls of electrodes inside the cochlea. The electrodes send electrical signals to the hearing nerve. It bypasses damaged cells and allows the brain to perceive sound.
The electrode array is placed into the cochlea, while the receiver/stimulator is attached to the skull. Patients typically stay in the cochlear implant surgery centre for 1-2 days. After that, they can return to their daily routine within one week. After about 3-4 weeks switch on of the device and rehabilitation phase begins. It includes regular mapping of the implant and speech therapy.
